The sun - While it is our biggest source of light, it is also the biggest source of warmth/heat. As the sun rises, its radiation is absorbed and creates heat. The stronger the sun, the stronger the radiation, the hotter it gets.
But what if we could actually harness the sun’s radiation, reversing this relationship from ‘more radiation means more heat in our buildings’, to a relationship of ‘more radiation actually means less heat in our buildings’? How many environmental and financial problems could we address at the same time?
SolCold uses a technology that revolutionizes this relationship – with SolCold: the stronger the sun, the cooler it gets. Radiation from the sun means cooling off and not heating up.
SolCold is developing a unique material, no thicker than a business card. Once applied to a surface of an object, the sun’s radiation triggers a reaction in our material. This reaction converts the heat accumulated in the object it is applied to - into radiation. This radiation is then emitted in a process called ‘anti-Stokes fluorescence’, thus providing the cooling effect. So basically, SolCold’s material functions as if it were a thin layer of ice that gets thicker and cooler as the sun gets stronger.
SolCold can be applied to buildings, cars, containers, and just about anything under the sun that needs cooling.
